She Let Go - Buggar!!

Post by grant81rs »

Gidday,

Yep it was the rings that were broken and the piston, barrel, circlip and gugdeon pin. F@#K!!!! :???:

As predicted the mechanic had a listen to the pipes while I wound over the engine, "its not you valves, it's the rings for sure", then he squirted a little oil into the top of the piston, attached the compression tester and I wound it over and we got 100psi on the gauge for a few strokes... "yep rings"

So he left and I quickly set about removing the head and barrel to see what I would find..... well here it is below!!

The circlip has come off and caused a shit load of damage!!

Now my question is will the Nikasil barrels and pistons from a 1982 R100rs fit onto my 6th month 1978 R100rs

I can get a good pair quickly and locally from a friend..

PS - Sibbo, when you replace your push rod tube seals, check and recheck the gugdeon pin circlips when you reattach, I did a few times as I was a little paranoid about this but something happened, but I made special attention all the same.

My condolences, Grant. :(
No one said this was going to be cheap easy.

Gidday,

The K1100 is sitting in the corner looking worried and a little scared at the moment, I may print out a for sale sign today for it :o

Read Snowbum's page http://bmwmotorcycletech.info/pistons.htm near the top...he discusses various types of swapping. Looks like you will have to trim the bottom of the cylinder to fit.

Condolences.

Why would you touch that clip doing pushrod seals?

When I did mine, I didn't even remove the jugs all the way.

Dang!

It sounds like your visiting mechanic friend knows his stuff. If it were me, he would be my guide as to what parts to use.

Gidday,

I just followed a walk thru video on the process, seemed simple and very straight forward at the time!!

Is the stroke long enough on an R100 to slide the bore out over the piston and get enough clearance to swap the push rod seals? I didn't pay attention on my R65 but I didn't think I had room. Shorter stroke, though. I guess you would not be replacing the base gasket or O-ring?

It is on the 1975 R/90. There are shims at the base, but no gasket or rubber.
