Passenger footpegs on R65

Post by Snejst »

Hi,
This is my first post in this forum :)

I have an R65 from 1981, which I had for 1.5 year now. It's really great, but the issue is that it's not comfortable to bring my girlfriend as a passenger. The biggest issue is that our feet are too close together, so either I have to bring my feet forward against the break/gear shifter or she has to move her feet backwards, which makes them lean on the exhaust pipe.

Did anyone have the same issue? Is there a kit to move the footpegs or any ideas on how to customize them? And potentially lift the seat as well.
Btw, I'm in Denmark, so it's a European bike.

Welcome to the forum! I don't have any specific experience with the R65, but the first thing that I thought of was the difference in wheelbase. An R100 of the same time period has a wheelbase of 1465 mm while the R65 shows 1390 mm. That's quite a difference, so I imagine things are squished a bit. Hopefully others will have some ideas for you.

Not sure on your bike but on my R80/7 you can adjust the passenger footrests and move them back a bit.

I'm wondering if your pillion peg mounts are anything like this:

These are in the low and forward position but I have the ones on my /6 in the high and rearward position and my very long legged pillion at the time had no complaints. Things were helped by me sitting forward on the seat.

A quick and dirty measurement looks like the radius is about 1 1/4" or 30mm, so about 60mm of range overall.

Call me Mel. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me at home, I thought I would ride about a little and see the other parts of the world.

I don't think the R45 has the adjustable brackets that are used on the 'big' bikes (as shown above). You could probably fit them if you could get hold of them...

No adjustment on my 79 R45 for the rear foot rests but it has never caused the problem with available space that you are experiencing. We have plenty of room when carrying a passenger. Is it possible that the front pegs have been moved backwards ?

Was it originally a R65LS?... the wheels appear to be the ones used on an LS... the ordinary R65 uses 'snowflakes'.

Yes they do look to be LS wheels. I prefer them to snowflakes. I'm sure they were a fair bit lighter too. Nothing else on the bike looks LS though unless the tail piece has the LS integrated grab handles which is hard to see with the panniers in the way. The little fairing around the instruments isn't there but I guess they are as rare as hens teeth by now. The front fender is not original, neither stock R65 or LS.

Thank you for all the responses. I took some photos up close. The passenger's footpegs are not moveable. My own may be adjustable, but I don't think it will give me much.
I have measured the inner distance to 16 cm on the left side and 19 cm on the right side. Is that smaller or similar to what you guys have?

I measured the center-to-center distance on my /7. My rear pegs have some adjustability to them, but are currently as far forward as they can get. My left side is 24.7 cm while my right side is 19.1 cm. Interesting my left side is the biggest...different than your measurements.
