Re: /7 rear drive wear
If it was Duane's fd, I'd reckon the brass looking chips would just be a reflection offa his gold tooth.

Re: /7 rear drive wear
Thanks Steve, that is exactly why I want to see the gear wear.
This can be avoided easily. Go to http://w6rec.com/duane/bmw/finaldrive/ and down to the heading of "Checking for proper BMW motorcycle final drive gear wear "
The good news is that the final drive is so reliable that the demand is low, so the price for a good used one is low too.

Duane, I think it is worth mentioning that one cannot simply remove the cover, inspect the gears and re-install the cover with a new gasket without checking and possibly re-shimming the rear drive. The current replacement gaskets are thicker than what BMW originally supplied in the 1970s.

Thanks for bringing that up.
We always checked the thickness of any gasket. Even back then they could be a different thickness in several applications, not just the final drive. That gasket usually came off without damage, so we just reused them.

Re: /7 rear drive wear
So....ya think there's more life out this rear drive with new little flakes just now showing up? Last oil change, October '13, was clean and clear, about 10k miles ago.
At the least, guess I'll be looking at a replacement rear drive soon.

Yeah, keep using it, but maybe check the oil again in 600 miles. Keep an eye out for a spare. That can be a lottery though.
Cheers, Steve

Re: /7 rear drive wear
Spent several days assisting a friend in getting his new-to-him 1978 R100/7 ready for the road. Been in his garage going on three years -just sitting with old, cracked Metzlers. A cosmetic beauty but the surprises I found; just one of which is...

There was a wee bit of lash in the final drive. The crown gear/spline bit should be hitting Bud Provin's Nickwackett Garage any moment now. Surprisingly, the wheel's cup splines show barely any wear.

Re: /7 rear drive wear
Original wheel was probably tossed. Not everyone knows they can be re-splined, or a PO could have already had a spare wheel so saw no point in going to the trouble. I suppose it's also possible that the PO had the rear splines re-done, but, from that crown gear/spline, the PO does not appear to be one bent on going to a lot of trouble.montmil wrote:Surprisingly, the wheel's cup splines show barely any wear.

The photo wasn't made to show the ring gear, but it looks like it may have a broken off tooth.
