In my job I book roadside assistance in for people broken down with their cars. I the last 2 weeks I done jobs for a 1940 VW and last night a 1965 VW Bettle.

Truth me known if I was to own a car I would love and old Beetle. Both my daughters love Kombis.

And while we're rebuilding this thread:

Don't forget clamps on at least the bits downstream of the pump. Consider the application of safety wire on the pump outlet and carb inlet as well. Those are straight presses and if they let go, electrical bits get sprayed

My cousins were motoring one day with their parents when they had one burn BITD. My cousin said "About ten minutes going from back to front and then BOOM."

I really dig the way vanzen's bug sits. The engine in Timo's bug looks the way it should. That is, all the tin in place and all the hoses and wires in good shape.

The question of the fuel filter is something to consider. In my previous '64, which had a severely tidy engine compartment, I once did a "mileage run". At one freeway ramp, I filled the tank into the neck of the tank so I could duplicate the fill and tell exactly how much gas I had used. I drove for close to two hours and filled it at a gas station at the off ramp. I had kept it at 55mph (harder to do than I thought it would be) and since it was all freeway, there had been no stops. Upon doing the math, I had achieved 38mpg. I went and did my visiting and drove normally on the way home. Doing about 65 or 70 in the second to slowest lane, I smelled gasoline and the engine quit running. Off with the ignition, in with the clutch, flip on the right turn signal and checking the mirror all this time; I bee-lined it for the emergency lane.

I had been driving VWs for years already, but hadn't run into this problem. The outlet side of the fuel pump had let go of the copper tube that is pressed into the pump body. It was still attached to the hose. I pulled it out of the hose and tapped it back into the pump with some force. Luckily, my car did not catch fire. I think adding a hose clamp and using it to attach a wire as melville suggests is a worthy endeavor.

I'd been driving VWs for a couple weeks when mine unpressed itself. No fire, but there was a hole in the tin which allowed the gas to splash directly on the exhaust. Scary. There were already clamps on the hoses, and my first safety wire job was achieved when I got home with 12 gauge copper :D

Mrs. melville repaired a neighbor's Beetle which blew it out the carb top. That one did burn a little when it sprayed on the generator. She had to rewire from the generator to the regulator, clamps and safety wire installed on the reassembly. Car still running years later.

Just received the tin set that I ordered from Volkaholic.
I did not need a complete set,
but ordered the bits that I wanted / needed to produce cabin heat in the bug this winter.
All OE VW pieces powder-coated in "Satin Grey" by Volkaholic.
Excellent work IMO:

So ... What's Mrs. melville doing this weekend ?

If you want defrost and heat AT IDLE, add a booster fan under the back seat.
A stock Type2 booster fan will work.

She's not turned a wrench in a while, like 5 years a while, but she's a capable Muir book VW mechanic. When I was trying to start my Airhead, she said subtly, "So what's it mean when the points appear to open and close but the static light stays on" and walked away. She's sneaky that way.
