Yes Tim, that is one of the advantages of using one of the outside (this forum) hosting sites. They offer 3 or 4 different size pictures you can choose from to post.
The determining factor will be a /small/, /medium/, /large/ or /original/ in the URL link for the picture. (at least on PBase)
yes, host them outside, however, this forum does have a maximum width limit, and it does trim from the right.
for example, from my photobucket account,
as size it will take

and the same image at a larger size that gets trimmed, showing the maximum width that will get shown
