I can't think of anything that's not in a BMW tool kit, unless your changing the swingarm too. Then you need a 22mm ?? socket and grind down the outside of it to fit the swing arm pivot lock nuts.

All the fork wrenchs are in the tool kit (or easy to make).

The R100RS frame will have as exrta fairing mount bolted at the neck taht will need to be removed. At least I think it's bolted on.

I think the rest of the frames will be OK. The R90S frame may be worth more to someone who is rebuilding one, but I can't think of anything unique about it other than it came from an R90S.

If the RS frame is a 77-80, that is the one to use. If it is later, it will require lots of mods to make it a clean install.
All the wiring and relay mounts changed in 81, so all the tabs under the tank will be incorrect. As well as the centerstand and sidestand and their respective mounting tabs being completely different, and oh yeah the rear brake pedal is different, etc etc and so on an so forth.

What year is the RS frame?

The '6 frames are fine but do not have the bracing across the front of the frame that was added in 1977, and depending on when they were made may not have the double tubing in the back bone of the frame.
My bet would be on the RS frame (provided the year is correct) don't worry about the front fairing mount, they are just tapped 8x1.0mm holes for the bracket. You will want to put in new steering head bearing during the swap and will need either a mig welder to weld out the old races or the correct puller from Kukko to remove them.\
I'm in Joshua tree and will pull the races for free if you feel like makin the trip.
The desert's awesome this time of year!
Also, that socket for the swingarm is 27mm not 22.
Buy one and bring it with you and I can turn it down in my lathe.
If none of these frames work out let me know, I think I have a non-opped 77 S frame laying around.........

Absolutely.
Direct bolt up.
The only real difference is the lack of the extra cross brace in the front. You probably won't notice it.
By 76, the frame had e the extra inner tube in the backbone, which is a good thing.
The horn may mount differently, but no big deal and not enough of a reason to not use the 76 frame.
Do you know for sure that it's straight?

so cal charlie,

Can you elaborate on what the policy was that blocked you from registering the frame? Could it have been registered as a "special construction" bike, or "salvaged"? I'm putting together a bike on a frame that has been unregistered for so long that it dropped out of the DMV records. That is why I ask.

OK ..I bought the 1977 75/7 at a impound sale for $2200 cause i really wanted it after getting it going the DMV tells me it has a NON REVIVABLE JUNK title it was towed in 07 from san fran auto return who sold it at a lien sale for $20 cause no one bid on it ..pick your part bought it and how it got down in so cal at the tow yard here i dont know .... now i tried to tag it in az. but got shut down on a level III inspecetion ...I can take the guy to court and get my money back but im in it for alot of time and i want the old bike the guy will lose in court for sure by not diclosing the bad title ....A 75/7 frame would be the best to keep it all OEM .... The sac DMV told me to get a letter head from san fran auto return saying it was put on there from a error but 3 calls latter they tell me were a big co. and can never do that .. a frame swap might be the only way to ride it again legaly...so this is where im at now....http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1978-BMW ... ccessories
