Snow on Mauna Kea in June!

Post by Deleted User 62 »

We have been having a lot of wind and rain in the past few weeks and after a particularly large storm crossed the islands a couple days ago, we have snow on the mountain! Image In order to take this picture I had to turn south off of the Saddle Road at the small cinder cone in the bottom right of this picture and go about 1/3 of the way up Mauna Loa. You can see a couple cars on the road to the left of the hill. This road starts out nice enough; one lane, lots of twisties, multiple blind corners with certain death/injury, man eating lava and invisible oncoming cars at every turn... you know: FUN! Further up, the vegetation and pavement fade away, leading to a totally surreal lava landscape. The whole top 1/2 of this mountain is solid rock, no trees. This road goes all the way to the top at around 13900', but I didn't have extra water or time to attempt the whole road. Image The view back across to Mauna Kea in the North from 9000' was quite spectacular. Image It was such a nice day, I continued on down through Hilo and into the Puna district. I wanted to take some more pictures of the "tree tunnel" and other interesting things along the way. Entering the tree tunnel Image Image This area, known as Red Road, winds along the coast down to what remains of Kalapana. Actually quite a nice twisty road with a bit of an ocean breeze. Image Image ...and finally back up the mountain through the old town of Pahoa. Image Hope you enjoyed these!

FUCKING SPECTACULAR SCENERY THERE, Timo !
Those trees lining the road are truly outrageous !
Completely beyond any concept of reality to this continent dweller !

Timo, as I looked at the pictures two things occurred to me. First, the opening road shot, that desolate road, would be nice on the bicycle for some reason. Second, in the last shot of the trees, if you could have someone get out on one of those big branches with a camera you could get a spectacular shot of riding under the trees. And as I wrote this I thought of putting a tripod near one end of the tunnel and riding toward it. They have electronic remote shutter activators now. Don't know how well they work.

Aloha

Yeah Chuey, I agree, there are some good bicycle rides and video opportunities to be had in that area. I bought a Drift HD170 camera and am working on getting my video recording setup up and running asap. The Drift can do 45 minutes in real time, or longer in timelapse. Coming soon to a video hosting website near you!

We have a few two lane roads in South Georgia and northeast Florida with live oak trees lining and overhanging just like that.

TIm, those are some beautiful pics. Keep 'em coming.
The Red Road (trees) looks like something out of Grimm's
Fairy Tales.
