The Douglas Model A went on sale in 1907 http://www.douglasmotorcycles.net/index ... pic=2087.0
with a fore and aft mounted horizontaly opposed engine. That layout remained in prodution till the Model 80, which is in Steve's pic, came out in the late 40s.
