I thought I might share a couple of images with you. At a recent coal mine inspection that I attended, mine management were keen to show us some work they were doing on their big Liebherr 996 excavators. See top right the new noise attenuation devices being fitted to keep the neighbours’ happy.
I was just blown away by the sheer scale of these machines. See the flatbed truck next to the tracks on the top photo. 620 tonne excavator, 36 m3 bucket capacity. It made me proud to ride a german bike.
Yep. Australia is the largest coal exporter in the world and we can't get the stuff out of the ground quick enough. The economy of my home State of New South Wales is heavily reliant on coal exports. In fact China, Korea and Japan are paying so much for coal, our domestic power generators are finding it hard to compete.
China is predicted to increase its thermal power output in the next 20 years by the equivalent of the current US capacity.
Scary stuff.
BTW Rob, I do environmental audits on mines so I'm hearing ya.
