Sorry to resurrect an old thread - but how do we get a larger rear tyre in past the brake shoes? I have struggled to get the old metzler 4.00 out (which is 110mm across).
are there narrower brake shoes that can be substituted?
If you mean 110mm is the mounted width it should come out easily enough as that is towards the narrow end of mounted tyre widths. Deflated it should come out no problem with the right preparations. For me that means removing rear mudguard so it will pull out straight.
This is many years out of date but it gives you an idea of mounted tyre widths
Thanks for the reply - the thing about stock is that there are very few all terrain tyres in stock sizes. The only one I've seen is TKC70 4.00-18 64T M+S rear - stretching to 120 gives a much bigger choice. The tip about deflation before assembly may well be a win.
BarryH - great data - thanks! These are the current contenders...
It would be worth checking the various tyre manufacturers websites to see if they have dimensional data for your list of tyres although my data was gathered a long time ago and not all manufacturers provided data even then. Some of the mounted widths came from members measuring the their own mounted tires.
