Hello all,

I would just like to take the time to introduce myself as a new boxerworks member and say HI to everyone. I live in SE Michigan and currently own a 1983 R100RT that I bought new in 1984. It has 57K on it. I am also BMWMOA and ABC member.

My rotor has tested out bad so I am looking at Euromotorelelctrics or MotorradElektrik replacement parts vs BMW parts. I have Ricks charging book on order.

My question is what is the current wisdom of one vendor or the other vs BMW? I am not planning on going with the big 450 watt alternator or the newer ignition setups at this time, just replacing the rotor and brushes and staying stock.

Can anyone share any thoughts as to who to go with or what they did or would do?

Welcome to the asylum! It's allaways nice to see some new faces.

EME and Motorrad have stellar reputaions around here. I have only done buisness with John at EME but lots of guys here deal with Rick and have nothing but praise for him. They both take our old bikes very seriously and will not deal in junk. Deal with whom ever you feel the most comfortable with.

As far as the rotor goes, the only differance I have ever heard of between an aftermarket and original has to do with polarization. The first step in the Silent Hektik ignition instalation manual
http://www.silent-hektik.com/E_B_PB5FH_08.pdf is about testing to see if the rotor in North or South poled. According to SH the OE ones are allways North Pole, and that is important to their system.

If you are still running a stock ignition this is just interesting trivia.

I have had a rotor with new brushes from Rick in my R100 for a few years now.
Trouble free.

I don't think you can go wrong with Rick Jones. He has steered me right more than once. AND, he's the Alabama A.B.C. Airmarshal.

You're probably aware of Snowbum. He's written up his comparisons of these and other charging systems on his website.

We had our first rotor go bad on a /5 that was only 5 months old. I suggest that you keep a spare on the shelf with your other spare parts.
