Yes, quite normal.
I used Motobins Oil filter change kit part number 01970 OEM BMW part.
Have been looking on the net for a schematic of the oil circuit to under stand why different oil filter ends but unable to find anything.

Spoke to Motobins this morning and they admit that the filter has been wrongly boxed however it would make no difference to the running of the engine? Which begs the question why two filters?
A correct one to be supplied FOC.
From what I can figure out from the limited info I have and looking at the Haynes manual I think a greater flow of oil would occur going to the oil cooler. any comments.

Getting lost now... it all hinges on whether your bike has an oil cooler or not.

Basics...

There are two types of oil filter. The one for a bike with an oil cooler will have one end open as in the image posted above.

The other type has a rubber seal at both ends. In fact both ends are identical (you're unlikely to meet one, but the original filters had seperate 'O' rings instead of the glue on seals... Both ends are still identical).

a) If you try to fit the filter for a bike without a cooler to one with a cooler adaptor, it simply won't fit... the filter is too long.

b) If you try to fit a filter for a bike with a cooler to one without, it will fit but it will be loose and the oil will not be filtered... please note that this will not be obvious when riding the bike, there will be no loss of pressure as the canister is (should be!) sealed... the oil will simply not be passing through the filter material.

If I'm reading your earlier posts right, situation 'b' above seems to apply... you need to replace the filter with the correct type.

Both types of filter colme in rigid or bendy forms... as far as I'm aware, there is no benefit in use, the bendy type are just more convenient to fit...

R100R's have oil coolers.
The OX36 filter removed was identical in length to the filter supplied (excluding the glued in seals) fitted without any issues and with a cover gap of approx 1mm before the 3 Allen screws were tightened. The glued in seal fitted over the raised boss of the cover shown a few post back so I concluded that's how its meant to be.
I trusted that the new OEM BMW filter supplied was the correct one, obviously not, wrongly boxed!

You can check for correct filter length in a similar way to that which I described for checking O ring compression. This time insert the filter and leave out the O ring a shims and offer up the cover. The gap between cover and crankcase face will now be due to the filter end seals. Obviously if you feel no resistance when offering up the cover then the filter is too short and won't seal. Again this check takes all of 30 seconds to do. I have had an instance when filter was too long and I had to shorten the seals. The filter length measured across the seals for an non oil cooler bike should be approx. 128mm.

Not wanting to be funny but it's always best practice to start a new thread when introducing a new query, rather than tack it onto the end of an old one, on this (and most other) forums. Helps to save the possibility of this sort of confusion...
