Something I haven't mentioned is that the cast "snowflake" front wheels used from 1978 on are generally 2.15" x 19" ...the stock tire sizes were the same, but the tire profile was slightly wider due to the wider rim. That's why the /7 fender mount is wider than the one on the original /6.

The stock size for your bike is 3.25" x 19" front and 4.00" x 18" rear. S11s are not available in the proper size...they are only available in metric sizes. Metric to inch conversions will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer...with some, a 100/90 is close to a 3.25" ...others the 90/90 is closer ...

A tire that is too wide will not protect your rims any better than the stock size...perhaps less. Think of the sidewall and how it absorbs the forces. An oversized tire will have a sidewall ...
