Does the end of the socket need to be flattened and squared?

Re: '78 R100s kill switch fried
Thanks Rob and Tom. I was able to get the bolt back in smoothly and torqued properly. Per both your comments I was equally concerned about the threads. I cleaned the frame and bolt very well. I was also able to move the locknut freely up and down the bolt and got a new metric bolt to test the frame,...

Re: '78 R100s kill switch fried
I replaced all burnt wires, cleaned all connections, and installed simple on/off toggle in place of kill switch. I also made sure all wiring under tank was properly insulated. Bike is running very well now. THANKS to all for your help! I did however have another issue with the right side swing arm b...

Re: '78 R100s kill switch fried
Finally had time to give the bike electrics a full inspection. As preliminary matter, am beginning to wonder if I did turn on the ignition switch initially. This given what Rob and barryh noted seems more likely to me now. Am proceeding now as if I did. Some observations; 1. Overall electrics are mu...

Re: '78 R100s kill switch fried
Hmm. I did remove the tank to top off the brake fluid about a week ago while I was waiting for the new battery. ..

That was my initial thought. But no, the poles are located same as the Panasonic LC-X1228P it replaced.

Re: '78 R100s kill switch fried
Hi gspd, Immediately started smoking after I turned the kill switch from 'Stop' to 'Run'. Never turned on the ignition. When I smelled the smoke I turned the switch to 'Stop' and disconnected the battery, negative lead first. Bike was running fine before I replaced the battery, but was unused for 2+...

Re: '78 R100s kill switch fried
Thank you barryh. Attached is photo from today. The wire is fried from the kill switch, thru the headlight, to the coil. I assume I will have to run a new wire thru the entire run. No fun, but manageable. fried.jpg My real question is, is this the culprit or a casualty from another short? I looked a...

Re: '78 R100s kill switch fried
Thank you very much Rob. I'm not the best with the electrics and previous owner had rewired bike completely. I don't think its 100% consistent with factory wiring diagram. Bike seemed to be running fine before the battery change. Any thoughts where to get started troubleshooting? Not sure what is me...
